Benjamin Vautier, detto Ben, nasce a Napoli nel 1935 dove vi passerà i primi cinque anni della sua vita.
Dopo qualche anno dell infanzia trascorsa tra Svizzera, Turchia ed Egitto, la madre dell’artista sceglie di installarsi a Nizza nel 1949.
A 15 anni lavora come “ragazzo tuttofare” in una libreria (Le Nain Bleu). Sfogliando i libri d’arte decide che :” Perché il bello sia bello è necessario che colpisca o abbia colpito”.
Il tempo passa e Ben fa numerosi incontri (Fontan, Malaval, Arman, Klein, etc.).
Lascerà “Le Nain Bleu”, aprirà una piccola cartoleria, poi un negozio di dischi usati che decora a modo suo. La “boutique” diventa col tempo un luogo d’incontro per i giovani che sognano di “fare del nuovo”.
È qui che Yves Klein gli propone di esporre le poesie a china che compone.
Nel 1959, Ben si entusiasma per il Nuovo Realismo; scrive a Spoerri una lettera che sarà il primo manoscritto della sua rivista “Ben Dieu” (“Ben Dio”), dove sviluppa la sua teoria del “in arte tutto è possibile”, l’arte che deve al tempo stesso provocare uno choc ed essere nuova.
L’arte di Ben diventa un’arte di appropriazione, così firma ciò che non lo era mai stato!
Invitato da Spoerri alla Misfits Fair di Londra, vi incontra Georges Maciunas che lo invita ad unirsi al gruppo Fluxus (“Tout est Art”) (“Tutto è Arte”).
È l’ora di “Mail Art” in cui si mescolano poesia, appropriazione e megalomania, è l’ora degli incontri, del teatro e dei concerti Fluxus (I pianoforti sono spaccati, le stanze riempite di carta, etc.).
Il 1965, è il momento delle “actions de rue” (“azioni di strada”).
Ben pubblica una rivista che chiama “Tout” (“Tutto”), distribuisce i suoi fogli “J’aime et j’attaque”.
Per l’artista, la frontiera tra l’arte e la vita è abolita. Ben si è esposto lui stesso ed è stato esposto (Galerie Templon – 1994, Musées di Marseille – 1995, etc.). Ben non ha ancora terminato di regolare i suoi conti con il mondo dell’arte, con la Cultura e con il suo ego.
